Let’s get things started with a book review! Tim suggested I read this one. It provides an entertaining history of telegraphy, which led to the first worldwide, wired, communication network. Its invention and adoption has had a significant impact socially and economically by eliminating the distance between people scattered all over the world. Throughout the book, the author, Tom Standage, makes thought-provoking comparisons between the rise of telegraphy and the Internet. For example, the evolution of telegraphic slang, much like Internet slang, was encouraged by the constraints placed on the number of characters one could send within a telegraph and the costs associated with it.
I really liked this book. It was an interesting and easy to read book. I recommend it to those who are interested in the impact that technology has on society and those wanting to place the Internet into historical context.
